Abstract
In this study the effect of estrogen replacement therapy on lipid, lipoprotein and apolipoprotein profiles was investigated in dyslipidemic postmenopausal women. The patients in both study and control groups were ingested the National Cholesterol Education Program Step I cholesterol-lowering diet during the study period (3 months). In addition to step I diet, the dyslipidemic postmenopausal patients were treated with conjugated equine estrogen, 0.625 mg daily, for 3 months. Diet plus placebo were given to controls. Estrogen replacement therapy was effective in lowering LDL-cholesterol and Apo-B 100 and increasing HDL-cholesterol and ApfrAI in dyslipidemic postmenopausal women. In conclusion, estrogen replacement therapy is an useful prophylactic agent for reducing risk of coronary heart disease in dyslipidemic postmenopausal women as in nor-molipidemic postmenopausal women.
