Abstract

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a widely used method for insertion of a gastrostomy tube in patients who are unable to eat but have a normally functioning gut. Our aim was to determine the indications, complications and outcome of PEG tube placement in our patients. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube was successfully performed on 19 patients between March 1999 and May 2001 in our hospital. We used pull method for the application of gastrostomy. 21 procedures were performed on 19 patients (12 male,! female).Neurological disorders causing dysphagia were the most common indication for PEG placement. Procedure-related mortality was 0%. Eight patients died within two years because of their primary disease (total mortality 42.3 %). Five (26.8 %) patients had 7 early complications (%33.3) (<30 days) and 4 (21 %) patients had 7 late complications (%33.3). All of them were minor complications. Our experience suggests that PEG is a safe and effective procedure for a long term enteral nutrition.
