Surgical treatment of primary congenital ventricular septal defects in advanced age

Abstract
As Ventricular Septal Defects can be spontaneously closed surgical closure can be postponded to advanced age. We performed surgical correction operation for 96 VSDs at advanced age (19 years old and more) between September 1990 and September 2000 at GATA Haydarpaşa Training Hospital. Eighty-four were male (87.5%) and 12 were female (12.5%) and mean age was 21.5±2.2. In 12 cases ASD was the coexisting cardiac abnormality. Seventy-seven of the VSDs were perimembraneous (80.21%), 14 were muscular (14.58%), 3 were inlet (3.13%) and 2 were (2.08%) outlet type VSDs. In 57 cases VSD was closed by patch (59.38%) and in 39 cases (40.62%)VSDs were closed by primary suture. Reoperation necessitated only for 12 cases (12.5%).

Ventriküler septal defektler spontan kapanabildiğin-den cerrahi düzeltim operasyonları ileri yaşlara kadar geciktirilebilmektedir. Biz Gülhane Askeri Tıp Akademisi (GATA) Haydarpaşa Eğitim hastanesinde Eylül 1990- Eylül 2000 tarihleri arasında ileri yaştaki (19 yaş ve üzeri) 96 ventriküler septal defekt (VSD) olgusuna cerrahi düzeltim uyguladık. Bunlardan 84 (%87,5)'ü erkek, 12 (%12,5)'si bayan, ortalama yaş 21,5±2.2 idi. Olgulardan 12'sinde ilave olarak sekundum tipi atrial septal defekt (ASD) mevcuttu. Perimembranöz VSD 77 (%80,21), müsküler VSD 14 (%14,58), inlet VSD 3 (%3,13), outlet VSD 2 (%2,08) olguda tesbit edildi. Patch ile kapatma 57 (%59,38), teflon destekli sütürle kapatma 39 (%40,62) olguda gerçekleştirildi. Olgulardan 12 (%12,5)'sinde reoperasyon uygulandı.
