Abstract

Today titanium and its alloys are becoming the materials of choice for dental restorations. At present, a number of different titanium casting systems are available in the market. Any metal that is intended to be used as a restorative material in the oral cavity should have a high corrosion resistance. Corrosion can be described as the dissolution or destruction of a metal by any media, either gas or liquid and it is characterized by weight loss and subsequent dimensional change. It has been a generally accepted view that corrosion products of any metal, placed in a living organism could lead to the development of tumors or cancer. Therefore metals used in the body and oral cavity must have a high corrosion resistance and must not be treated or used in a configuration that would degrade the corrosion behavior. Corrosion does also effect the strength of a restoration and stimulate excessive plaque and calculus retention. The esthetics will also be in question. The oxide layer of titanium gives the property of high corrosion resistance to titanium. However, inorganic acids such as hydrofluoric acid are still able to pass this barrier in any concentration and at any temperature. Most of the dental fluoride preparations or oral -rinses are either acidic or contain hydrofluoric acid which can easily pass the oxide layer and attack the actual titanium surface resulting the corrosion of the metal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the corrosive effects of three different oral-rinses and a prophylactic fluoride gel on the surface of cast titanium.
