Abstract

Transient Sensorineural hearing loss following Lumbar puncture was related to the diameter of the needle such as 22-gauge needles. This Prospective study was made to assess if there happens any hearing loss following the myelography prospective that we make with a 20-gauge needles. 35 patients with lumbar disc herniations were included. 20- gauge needles were used for punctures After removing 5 ml. of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)were, 10ml of iohexol (240 mgl/ml.) were introduced into the subarachnoid spaces. Pure tone audiametric tests with bone and air conduction and speech discrimination tests were done, before the myelographies, one seven days after the myelographies. None of the patients had any hearing problem. If the possible mechanism of such a disturbance is the CSF leakage through the dural tear, the incidence of transient hearing loss might be reduced with careful manipulation.
