IgG ELISA is a valuable test in laboratory screening of syphilis

Abstract
Using a well-known confirmatory test, FTA-Abs, the value of ELISA was evaluated as a confirmatory test. Sera from 57 patients with VDRL positive were investigated for the presence of T. pallidum specific antibodies using ELISA (for IgG and IgM) and FTA-Abs tests. FTA-Abs test confirmed 78.9% (n=45) of VDRL positive cases. Of FTA-Abs positive cases, 40 and 30 patients were positive for IgG and IgM and 42 patients were positive for IgG and/or IgM by ELISA, tively. When compared to FTA-Abs, the sensitivity of the IgG ELISA, the IgM ELISA and IgG+IgM were 88.9%, 66.7% and 93.3%, respectively. The specificity of the IgG, IgM and IgG+IgM were 58.3%, 50%, and 50%, respectively. According to our results, IgG ELISA test is not a confirmatory test, but can be used as a valuable screening test with its high sensitivity.

İyi bilinen ve bir doğrulama testi olan FTA-Abs kullanılarak, bir doğrulama testi olarak ELISA'nın önemi değerlendirildi. VDRL pozitif 57 hastanın serum örnekleri, Treponema pallidum spesifik antikorların varlığı açısından ELISA (IgG ve IgM için) ve FTA-Abs testleri kullanılarak araştırıldı. FTA-Abs testi, VDRL pozitif olguların %78.9'unu (n=45) doğruladı. FTA-Abs pozitif olgulardan 40 ve 30 hasta, ELISA ile sırasıyla IgG ve IgM; 42 hasta ise IgG ve/veya IgM yönünden pozitifti. FTA-Abs ile karşılaştırıldığında; IgG ELISA, IgM ELISA ve IgG+IgM'in duyarlılığı sırasıyla %88.9, %66.7 ve %93.3 idi. IgG ELISA, IgM ELISA ve IgG + IgM'in özgüllüğü ise sırasıyla %58.3, %50 ve %50 idi. Bizim sonuçlarımıza göre, IgG ELISA bir doğrulama testi değildir. Fakat yüksek olan duyarlılığı ile değerli bir tarama testi olarak kullanılabilir.
