Abstract
Objective: It is known that there are some complaints in many of children with cerebral palsy (CP) related to feeding at various degrees. In this study it was aimed to determine the feeding problems of children with cerebral palsy and attitude of their families. Methods: In this study, a questionnaire was applied to the mothers of 44 children with CP in Isparta Center of Spastic Children. Results: It was observed that 52.3% of children had oromotor dysfunction at various degrees. The most feeding problems were constipation and poor appetite followed by frequent couching attacks during feeding, fluid or food loss during eating, drinking, regurgitation, saliva secretion, aspiration and chewing difficulties. Because of complaints, 25.5 % of the parents stated that they followed an altered diet regulation and 24.0% used medication. These children spent an eating which time mean 2±1/2 hours daily (range 1-4 hours), and only 36.4% of them were performing independently. Conclusion: These results indicate that the applications of parents related to feeding problems of children with CP in the study group are insufficient and these children bring a load on parents even for feeding.
