Abstract

Objective: It was aimed to evaluate whether peripheral nerve conduction velocity (NCV), nonverbal intelligence (IQ), testosterone and estradiol had any effect on hand preference and hand skill. Methods: In 22 volunteered university students hand preference was assessed by Edinburgh Handedness Questionnaire. Hand skill was evaluated by peg moving test for both hands separately and difference between them was calculated. IQ was determined by Cattell's Culture Free Intelligence Test. Total testosterone and estradiol levels were measured by using commercial kits. Peripheral nerve conduction velocity for both hands were measured separately. Results: In the right handed males IQ was related to left hand peg moving time and estradiol, testosterone was related to the right and the left hand NCV. In the right handed females IQ was related to estradiol. There was no relation between IQ and right and left hand NCV in the left handed females. Conclusion: In the right handed males as testosterone increases the right hand skill increases, the right and the left hand NCV decrease; as estradiol increases right handedness decreases, left hand skill increases; as IQ increase left hand skill decreases, estradiol decreases; in the right handed females as testosterone increases right and left hand skill increase, right handedness decreases; as IQ increases estradiol decreases; in the left handed females as testosterone increases both hand skill increase; as estradiol increases left hand skill decreases.
