Abstract

Background: The frequency of viral gastroenteritis is gradu- ally increasing especially in developing countries. It is important for the diagnosis of viral antigens in stool samples analyzed. In this study, preliminary diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis in children aged 0-5 in stool samples of patients was conducted to determine the incidence of rotavirus and adenovirus. Materials and Methods: Stool samples were collected between February 2011 and December 2012 from 820 children suffering from gastroenteritis. Six hundred fourty eight stool specimens found negative for bacterial and parasitic agents, were evaluated for rotavirus and adenovirus antigens using latex agglutination method. Rotavirus and adenovirus frequency were statistically evaluated according to seasonal distribution, age and gender of patients. Results: Viral antigens were detected in 426 (65.7%) out of 648 specimens and no viral antigens were detected in 222 (34.3%) patients. Among the positive specimens, rotavirus (n=312, 48.1%) and adenovirus antigens (n= 114; 17.6%) were detected. In 43 (6.5%) patients both adenovirus and rotavirus positivity was revealed. Positive rotavirus antigen was detected most frequently in winter and in 5-24 month-old pediatric groups . No significant correlation was detected between adenovirus antigen-positivity and seasons and age . There was no statistically significant difference between viral antigen positivity and gender. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that rotavi- rus was a frequent cause of acute gastroenteritis in child- ren in Erzurum area. Thus investigation of rotavirus and adenovirus antigens in fresh stool samples in patients with acute gastroenteritis especially during autumn and winter is important to prevent inapproprate antibacterial and antiparasitic drug use.
