The Effect of Case Method Designed with Band Caricatures on Social Studies Lesson Achievement Levels of Gifted Students of BILSEMs and Students in Formal Education

BİLSEM’deki Özel Yetenekli Öğrencilerde ve Örgün Eğitimdeki Öğrencilerde Bant Karikatürleriyle Desenlenmiş Örnek Olay Yönteminin Sosyal Bilgiler Dersinde Başarıya Etkisi

Abstract

This study used both true experimental design and quasi-experimental design to research how the case method designed with band caricatures affects the achievement levels of gifted students and students with normal development in social studies lesson. In this study, which was carried out in the fall semester of the 2018-2019 academic year, deployed multi-stage sampling method due to conducting the study with totally three groups –two experimental and one control group. Therefore, convenience sampling, purposeful sampling and simple random sampling methods are used as well. The data used in the study were collected through the social studies achievement test that was developed by one of the researchers of the study. In the data analyses, SPSS 22 statistical software was used to calculate arithmetical average, standard deviation, standard error, corrected p values, Shapiro-Wilk test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank test, One Way ANOVA test, Kruskal Wallis H test, Dunn’s Pairwise test and Levene’s test scores. The results reached may be summarized briefly as follows: Social studies lesson academic achievement levels of both of the experimental groups, who were taught with case method designed with band caricatures [group of gifted students (experimental-1) and the group of students with normal development (experimental-2)], are found to be significantly higher than the group of students with normal development characteristics who were taught with classical case method. The difference in the pretest posttest scores of the experimental groups and the control group shows that the case method both in band caricature design and with classical way increase the achievement levels of the students in social studies lesson. In other words, the case method designed with band caricatures increased the social studies lesson achievement levels of gifted students and students with normal development characteristics. On the grounds of these results, both teachers of social studies and primary school teachers are recommended to use band caricatures.

Bant karikatürleriyle desenlenmiş örnek olay yönteminin BİLSEM’deki özel yetenekli öğrencilerde ve örgün eğitimdeki öğrencilerde kullanımının sosyal bilgiler dersinde başarıya etkisinin araştırıldığı bu çalışmada hem gerçek deneysel hem de yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. 2018-2019 eğitim öğretim yılı güz döneminde gerçekleştirilen bu çalışmada ikisi deney ve biri kontrol grubu olmak üzere üç grupla çalışma yürütüldüğünden çok aşamalı örnekleme yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Buna bağlı olarak araştırmada kolay ulaşılabilir örnekleme, amaçlı örnekleme ve basit seçkisiz örnekleme yöntemlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri; sosyal bilgiler başarı testi ile elde edilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde SPSS 22 istatistik programı kullanılarak her bir alt problem için verilerin normal dağılım gösterip göstermediğine tüm gruplardaki öğrenci sayıları 30’un altında olduğu için Shapiro-Wilk testi sonuçları dikkate alınarak bakılmış ve grupların öntest dışındaki p (.751;.055;.081) değerleri incelendiğinde verilerin normal dağılım göstermediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Buna bağlı olarak aritmetik ortalama, standart sapma, standart hata, düzeltilmiş p değerleri, Shapiro-Wilk testi, Wilcoxon İşaretli Sıralar testi, One Way ANOVA testi, Kruskal Wallis H testi, Dunn’s ikili çiftler testi ve Levene testi puanları hesaplanmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen sonuçlar kısaca söyledir: Bant karikatürleriyle desenlenmiş örnek olay yöntemiyle öğrenim gören her iki deney grubunun [BİLSEM’deki özel yetenekli öğrencilerden oluşan (deney-1) ve örgün eğitimdeki öğrencilerden oluşan (deney-2)], klasik örnek olay yöntemiyle öğrenim gören örgün eğitimdeki öğrencilerinden oluşan (kontrol) gruba göre sosyal bilgiler dersi akademik başarı düzeylerinin anlamlı düzeyde yüksek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Deney gruplarının ve kontrol grubunun ön test-son test puanları farkına göre bakıldığında örnek olay yönteminin hem bant karikatürleriyle desenlenerek kullanımının hem de klasik olarak kullanımının öğrencilerin sosyal bilgiler dersi başarı düzeylerini artırdığı görülmüştür. Bir başka ifadeyle BİLSEM’deki özel yetenekli öğrencilerde ve örgün eğitimdeki öğrencilerde bant karikatürleriyle desenlenmiş örnek olay yönteminin kullanımı sosyal bilgiler dersi başarısını artırmıştır. Bu sonuca bağlı olarak hem sosyal bilgiler hem de sınıf öğretmenlerine bant karikatürlerini kullanmaları önerilebilir.
