The Changing Temporal and Spatial Patterns of Immigration to Turkey

Abstract
Some changes experienced in the characteristics of global migration towards the end of the 20th century started to be observed also in Turkey and these changes become more pronounced as of the beginning of the 21st century. In addition to the changes that have occurred in the quantity and quality of migration to Turkey since 1980, changes have occurred in both the source areas as well as the spatial patterns within the country. The aim of this study was to determine the changing spatial patterns of international migration source fields during the last 40 years in Turkey through the existing migration data. Despite the limited data available, some results have been obtained regarding alters the changing immigration profile of citizen-foreigner distinction in Turkey which was also addressed in the study. The main finding of the study in addition to the changes observed in the profiles from citizen to foreigner coming to Turkey was the determination of spatial patterns expanding from regional to global. This change in spatial pattern has been discussed within the theory of migration systems. As a result of expanding the geography of international migration it has led to the articulation of Turkey's more than one regional migration system.

XX. Yüzyılın sonuna doğru küresel göçün karakteristiklerinde yaşanan bazı değişimler Türkiye için de gözlenmeye başlamış ve XXI. yüzyılın başından itibaren ise daha da belirginleşmiştir. 1980’den itibaren Türkiye’ye gelen göçün niceliği ve niteliği yanında hem kaynak sahaları hem de ülke içindeki mekânsal örüntüleri de değişmeye başlamıştır. Bu araştırma, Türkiye’ye olan uluslararası göçün son 40 yıldaki kaynak sahasının değişen mekânsal örüntülerini mevcut göç verileri üzerinden belirlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Göçün kaynak sahalarındaki değişimin dışında vatandaş-yabancı ayrımındaki değişen profiline de değinilen araştırmada mevcut verilerin sınırlılığına rağmen bazı sonuçlara erişilmiştir. Araştırmanın en temel bulgusu, Türkiye’ye gelen göçün vatandaştan yabancıya doğru profilindeki değişimin yanı sıra bölgeselden küresele genişleyen bir mekânsal örüntüye sahip olduğudur. Mekânsal örüntüdeki bu değişim göç sistemleri kuramı içerisinde tartışılmıştır. Sonuçta, uluslararası göçün giderek genişleyen coğrafyası Türkiye’nin birden fazla bölgesel göç sistemine eklemlenmesine yol açmıştır.
