Abstract
In this study, attention-drawing behavior of secondary schoolteachers (5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade) was analyzed from the view of teachers and students. The population of the study consists of teachers and students from secondary schools in the central districts of Adana during the Academic Year 2014/2015. Among all schools in all districts of the city, 20% were randomly chosen to form the sample of the study. 432 teachers and 1023 students participated voluntarily in the study. Comparable questionnaires developed for students and teachers were used to collect the data. At the end of the research, the participant teachers were found to display the following behaviors most to grab the attention of their students during their lessons: answering their questions, appreciating positive attitudes of students, conducting lessons according to the level of students, keeping silence in the classroom during the lesson, enabling students to associate their background knowledge with new topics, changing their tone of voice and emphasizing the important points of a topic. Significant differences were found in the behaviors of teachers to draw the attention of students with regard to gender, subjects to teach, teaching experience, the teacher’s perception about students’ academic success level and students’ attention levels. The results gained from the students showed that teachers mostly drew their attention on the lesson through keeping silence during the lesson and giving hints about questions that might be asked in the exams. Female students with regard to gender, 5th grade students with regard to class year and students who described themselves as attentive stated that teachers demonstrated attention-grabbing behaviors more often. Teachers were found to perceive themselves more positive in terms of use of attention-grabbing behaviors during the lesson.
