The Opinions of Teachers on Elective Science Applications Course and the Relationship of the Course with PISA

Abstract
In the research, it is aimed to determine the opinions of the teachers on elective Science Applications course and the relationship of the course with the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). In the study designed in the pattern of case study, one of the qualitative research techniques, the data was gathered through semi-structured interview method. The findings of the study may be stated as follows: i) The course plays an important role in the formation of students' scientific interest. It assists them to learn effectively and to improve their thinking skills, and furthermore contributes to their personal development. ii) According to the teachers, the knowledge gained in the course are partially applied. iii) The suggestions in the process of learning and teaching of the course are at low level and partly applicable. In the meantime, the teachers prefer the experiment or activity method the most. iv) Teachers are of opinion that the course is related to the PISA, and that students should do the activities in the course to increase their levels of success in the PISA. v) Teachers are most often experiencing problems that arise from school and students.
Özet
Araştırmada, seçmeli bilim uygulamaları dersine ve dersin PISA (uluslararası öğrenci değerlendirme programı) ile ilişkisine yönelik öğretmen görüşlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması deseninde tasarlanan araştırmada veriler, yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşme yöntemi ile elde edilmiştir. Öğretmenlerle yapılan görüşmeler sonucunda elde edilen veriler içerik analizi ile çözümlenmiştir. Araştırmada ulaşılan sonuçlar şu şekildedir. 1- Dersin öğrencilerde, bilimsel ilgiyi oluşturmada, etkili öğrenmeyi gerçekleştirmede, öğrencilerin düşünme becerilerini desteklemede ve kişisel gelişimlerine katkı sağlamada önemli olduğu belirlenmiştir. 2- Öğretmenlere göre dersteki kazanımlar kısmen uygulanmaktadır. 3- Dersin öğrenme-öğretme sürecinde yer alan önerilerin düşük düzeyde ve kısmen uygulanabilir olduğu, öğretmenlerin en çok deney/etkinlik yöntemini tercih ettikleri belirlenmiştir. 4- Öğretmenler, dersle PISA’nın ilişkili olduğu, PISA’da başarıyı arttırmak için dersteki etkinlikleri öğrencilerin yapması gerektiği görüşündedir. 5- Öğretmenlerin derste en çok okul ve öğrenciden kaynaklanan sorunlar yaşadıkları ifade edilmiştir.
