Abstract
The aim of this study was to demonstrate the incidence of anemia in prepubertal obese children by comparing hematological parameters of 31 prepubertal obese children (age range: 4.7-8.6 years; average age: 7.2±0.9) with the control group of 30 prepubertal healthy children (age range 5.0-8.7 years; average age: 7.5±0.9 years) with similar age and sex distribution. The analysis showed that the average body mass index was considerably higher in the obese group. However, no significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of mean hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cell count, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, red blood cell distribution width, white blood cell count and platelet count. Hence, no statistical difference was detected between prepubertal obese children of ages 5-9 years and the healthy control group in terms of anemia incidence. We concluded that preadolescent obese children are not at risk in terms of iron deficiency and hence iron metabolism tests should be treated as redundant unless an evident risk factor is observed.
Özet
Prepubertal obez çocuklardaki anemi sıklığının gösterilmesi amacıyla yapılan bu çalışmaya 31 prepubertal obez çocuk (yaş dağılımı: 4.7-8.6 yıl; ortalama 7.2±0.9 yıl) ile kontrol grubu olarak 30 prepubertal sağlıklı çocuk (yaş dağılımı: 5.0-8.7 yıl; ortalama 7.5±0.9 yıl) alındı. Yaş ve cinsiyet dağılımları benzer özellikler taşıyan vakaların hematolojik parametreleri karşılaştırıldı. Obez grubun ortalama vücut kitle indeksi (VKİ) kontrol grubundan belirgin olarak yüksek bulundu. Her iki grubun ortalama hemoglobin, hematokrit, ortalama eritrosit hacmi, kırmızı küre sayısı, ortalama eritrosit hemoglobini, kırmızı küre dağılım genişliği, lökosit sayısı ve trombosit sayısı değerleri arasında fark bulunmadı. Preadolesan dönemdeki obez çocukların demir eksikliği açısından riskli gruba girmediğini ve bu çocuklara eğer belirgin bir risk faktörü yoksa gereksiz demir metabolizması tetkiklerinin yapılmamasını öneririz.
