The Democratic Party's Election Campaigns in Kocaeli Ahead of General Elections in the Period from 1950 to 1957

Abstract
The establishment of the Democratic Party (DP) as a result of transition to a multi-party system ushered in a new era in the history of Turkish democracy. The DP, unable to obtain the desired results in the 1946 elections, sweeping in all three general elections between from 1950 to 1957 remained in power alone for a decade. The DP won most of the votes in those elections in Kocaeli, and therefore all its candidates from this province was elected to Parliament. According to the local press in Kocaeli, before the elections, the DP and the Republican People's Party (CHP) had followed a serious election strategy which brought about a fierce competition between them. The present study, which mainly focuses on the DP's election campaigns in Kocaeli, has been conducted by making use of the relevant works and particularly the local press in that time.
Özet
Bilindiği üzere çok partili hayata geçişin bir sonucu olarak Demokrat Parti’nin (DP) kurulması Türk demokrasi tarihinde yeni bir dönemin başlangıcı olmuştur. 1946 seçimlerinde istediği neticeyi elde edemeyen DP, bu seçimlerden sonra yapılan üç seçimde de başarılı olarak 1950 ve 1960 tarihleri arasında tek başına iktidarda kalabilmiştir. DP, Kocaeli’nde bu seçimlerin hepsinde başarılı olmuş ve vilâyetin bütün milletvekillerini tek başına çıkarmıştır. Kocaeli yerel basınına göre, seçimlerden önce DP ve Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) ciddi bir seçim stratejisi uygulamış ve aralarında sert bir rekabete girişmişlerdir. Bu çalışmada, seçimler dolayısıyla DP’nin Kocaeli genelindeki seçim propagandaları ve çalışmaları ele alınmaktadır. Bu kapsamda makale, başta devrin yerel basını başta olmak üzere; araştırma ve inceleme eserlerden istifade edilerek hazırlanmıştır.
