Abstract
Objective: Group B streptococci (GBS; Streptococcus agalactiae) is an important pathogen in peripartum women and their newborn infants. The aim of this study was to investigate GBS carriage in pregnant women. Materials and Methods: Vaginal culture samples were studied with conventional methods. Results: The vaginal colonization with GBS was detected in 3 of 180 women (1.7%). Conclusions: Surveillance of vaginal cultures for GBS was recommended in pregnant women because GBS is a treatable potential pathogen agent.
