Political and Cultural Denial of Orientalism in the Thought of Tanzimat Period

Abstract

The West’s cultural relationship with the East, which we can take to the Crusades, has been transformed into other imagery in the following centuries, and the interests and ambitions of the West on the political basis have emerged as a result of this imagination. After the European enlightenment, the imperialmotivation of the search for raw materials and marketsenabled the orientalistactivities towards the East and Islamic nations, and sought to displace and reshape the historical, religious and traditionalelements that constituted the culturalfunction of the Eastern and Islamic unity. In this essay, whichwillexamine the influence of this phenomenon on the Tanzimat intellectuals, we willexamine the perceptions of the Western anarchists on the Islamic civilization and history, and the counterparts of the Ottomanintellectuals who object to theseperceptions.

Haçlı seferlerine kadar götürebileceğimiz Batı’nın Doğu ile kültürel münasebeti sonraki yüzyıllarda öteki muhayyilesine dönüşmüş, Batı’nın siyasî temelde ilgi ve emelleri ise bu imgelemin neticesinde ortaya çıkmıştır. Avrupa aydınlanmasından sonra hammadde ve pazar arayışının emperyal güdüsü; Doğu ve İslâm uluslarına yönelik oryantalist faaliyetleri etkin kılmış, Doğu ve İslâm birliğinin kültürel fonksiyonunu oluşturan tarihî, dinî ve geleneksel unsurları yerinden oynatıp yeniden şekillendirme amacı içerisinde bulunmuştur. Tanzimat’ı oluşturan süreçte oryantalizm olgusu ve bu olgunun Tanzimat aydınları üzerindeki tesirini kişiler özelinden inceleyeceğimiz bu makalede, Batılı müsteşriklerin İslâm medeniyeti ve tarihine yönelik oluşturmaya çalıştıkları algıları ve bu algılara itiraz eden Osmanlı aydınları karşıtlarıyla birlikte incelenecektir.
