The Effect of Self Construals on Adolescents' Life Satisfaction and Depression Level

Benlik Kurgularynyn Ergenlerin Yaşam Doyumu ve Depresyon Düzeylerine Olan Etkisi

Abstract

Objectives: Life satisfaction and depression areimportant variables which effect adolescent's mentalhealth. Autonomy is an important developmental taskin adolescent period. Autonomy has been explainedwith the concept of self construal in context of cultural psychology. The purpose of the study is toinvestigate the effect of self construals that definedby Kagitsibasi on adolescent's scores of life satisfaction and depression. Method: A total of 494 highschool students participated in the study. Of these184 were male and 210 were female. Their age rangewas from 14 to 17 and mean age was 15.87(Sd=0.86). Autonomous-Related Self-in-Family Scales,Satisfaction with Life Scale and Beck DepressionInventory were administered to collect data. PearsonCorrelation and Path analysis were used to analyzethe data. Results: The results revealed that self construals predicted significantly adolescent's life satisfactionand depressive symptoms. Results showed thatautonomous self predicted positively depression butdid not predict significantly life satisfaction, relatedself predicted positively life satisfaction but did notpredict depression and finally autonomous-related selfpositively predicted life satisfaction and negativelypredicted depression. Conclusion: Autonomous-relatedself both increase individuals' life satisfaction and prevail depression because it covers two basic needs:autonomy and relatedness. The results of this studyshowed that autonomy and relatedness are bothimportant for the adolescents' mental health.According to results of this study parents and specialists should support adolescents' autonomy andrelatedness.
