The Township of Bodrum According to Annuals

Abstract

The Ottoman Provincial Annuals, the issuance of which started in 1867, provide ample information on the economic and social orders of provinces. Their regular issuance each year enables us to examine the situation of cities systematically. The Provincial Annuals for the Province of Aydın started to be issued in 1880. They also cover data relating to the Township of Bodrum. As a precious coastal county within the boundaries of the modern day Muğla city, Bodrum was also prominent in the history thanks to its special position and it became one of the towns which were first to experience the innovations that the Ottoman State had brought to the administrational and social fields in the 19th Century. This article deals with many subject matters including the administrational structure, livelihoods, population, and educational institutions etc. of Bodrum. It thus aims to shed light to the Bodrum of the 19th Century.

Özet

1867 yılından itibaren çıkan Vilayet Sâlnâmeleri şehirlerin idarî, iktisadî ve sosyal düzenleri hakkında pek çok bilgiyi içermektedir. Salnamelerin her sene çıkması şehirlerin durumunun düzenli bir şekilde incelenmesini sağlamaktadır. 1880 yılından itibaren Aydın Vilayet Sâlnâmeleri yayınlanmıştır. Bu yıllıkların içinde Bodrum Kazası'na ait veriler de bulunmaktadır. Bugün Muğla ili sınırları içinde, kıyı şeridinde nadide ilçelerden biri olan Bodrum tarihte de bu özel konumu nedeniyle ön plana çıkarak Osmanlı Devleti'nin idarî ve sosyal alanda XIX. Yüzyılda meydana gelen yenilikleri yaşayan şehirlerden biri olmuştur. Makalede Bodrum'un idarî yapısı, geçim kaynakları, nüfusu ve eğitim kurumları gibi pek çok konuya değinilmiştir. Bu şekilde XIX. Yüzyıl Bodrum'una ışık tutulmaya çalışılmıştır.
