The Manaps and Their Role in Kirghiz History

Abstract

This article investigates the Manaps, the wealthy and noble class of Kirghiz society. During the USSR era, the Manaps were shown as despots, and it was not a llowed to do research on them. Therefore, the Manaps are still among the least researched subjects. This article attempts to identify the meaning of the word Manap, their origins, position and occup ations within society. Lastly, it elaborates on the Manaps' status before Tsarist Russia, during Tsarist Russia and during the USSR period. The reasons behind the Manaps' evacuation during the 1920s and 1930s are also examined.

Bu çalışmada, Kırgız toplumunun zengin ve asilzade tabakasına mensup olan 'Manap' zümresi ele alınmıştır. SSCB döneminde manapların hepsi ayırt edilmeksizin halkı ezen sınıfolarak gösterilmiş ve yasaklı konuların listesine dâhil edilmiştir. Manaplar, halen üzerinde yeterince çalışmanın yapılmadığı konular arasındadır. Bu makalede manap adının anlamı,kimler oldukları, ne zaman ortaya çıktıkları, toplumdaki konumları ve görevleri üzerinde durulmuş, manapların Çarlıköncesi ve Çarlık dönemi ile Sovyet dönemindeki durumunuincelenmiştir. Ayrıca manapların 1920-1930'lu yıllarda tasfiyeedilme sebepleri üzerinde durulmuştur.
