The Place and Importance of Figurative Ornaments Being Used on Architectural Work and Handicrafts in the City of Ağrı Within the Turkish Figurative Ornament World

Abstract

Forming one of the most important passage routes between Europe and Asia at the cutting edge of the Anatolian geography, the province of Ağrı has been an important zone of occupation since ancient times. The region that sustained its importance due to its geopolitical position during the Medieval and afterwards is very rich in terms of Turkish-Islamic masterpieces.The palaces, mosques, tombs, cemeteries, headstones, as well as figurative ornaments being observed on handicrafts in the city are all remarkable in terms of culture and art history. Having many samples primarily such as lions and eagles, as well as humans, rams, sheep and horses, these figurative ornaments are observed to be frequently handled in the Turkish figurative ornament repertoire. These figurative ornaments that contain the traces of the Turkish culture with their iconographic meaning also form one of the most important clues in determining the bonds of the Turkish art that has spread in a wide geography. This study tries to determine the place, importance and bonds of figurative ornaments being used on architectural work and handicrafts in the provincial borders within the Turkish figurative world with the help of examples

Özet

Anadolu coğrafyasının uç noktasında, Asya ile Avrupa arasında önemli geçiş güzergâhlarından birisini oluşturan Ağrı ili toprakları eski çağlardan beri önemli bir yerleşim alanı olmuştur. Ortaçağ ve sonrasında da jeopolitik konumundan dolayı önemini korumuş olan bölge Türk-İslam sanatı eserleri bakımından oldukça zengindir. İlde bulunan saray, cami, türbe, mezarlık ve mezar taşları ile el sanatlarında görülen figürlü bezemeler kültür ve sanat tarihi açısından dikkat çekicidir. Başta aslan ve kartal olmak üzere insan, koç, koyun, at gibi birçok örneğine rastlanılan bu figürlü bezemelerin Türk figüratif bezeme repertuarında en çok işlenen figürler olduğu görülmektedir. İçerdikleri ikonografik anlamları ile Türk kültürünün izlerini bünyesinde barındıran bu figürlü bezemeler aynı zamanda geniş bir coğrafyaya yayılan Türk sanatının bağlarını tespit etmede de en önemli ipuçlarından birisini oluşturmaktadır. Bu çalışmada il sınırları içinde yer alan mimari eserlerde ve el sanatlarında görülen figürlü bezemelerin Türk figür dünyası içindeki yeri, önemi ile bağlantıları örneklerle tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır
