Transition from Dictatorship to Democracy in Spain: 1975-1982

Abstract

Spain was ruled under the authoritarian regime led by the General Francisco Franco Bahamonde for 36 years period following the ending of the Civil War in 1939. Franco died in 1975 and since that time the country has accomplished a success in establishing western type of democracy with its institutions and rules by stripping the previous long-term administration. This article examines the transition period of Spain from dictatorship to democracy. To do this, the author firstly discusses the general characteristics of the Franco's regime and then.describes the new period began after his death. She points out some important developments through focusing on these questions: How did they realize a consensus -on transition to a democratic regime- among different social stratas; Who were the main social and political actors that had became effective during the period and, What was the importance of 1977 general elections and 1981 movement for a Military Coup. As a conclusion, how Spain realized the transition in a peaceful way question is trying to be answered.

İspanya, 1939 'da biten iç savaşın ardından otuz altı yıl boyunca aralıksız olarak Franco'nun otoriter rejimi altında yönetildi. 1975'te Franco'nun ölümünden sonra ispanya, uzun süre devam eden diktatörlük yönetiminden sıyrılıp batı tipi demokrasiyi bütün kurum ve kurallarıyla yerleştirmeyi başardı, işte bu çalışma ispanya'da diktatörlükten demokrasiye geçiş sürecini ele almaktadır. Yazıda öncelikle Franco rejiminin genel özelliklerinden söz edilmektedir. Sonra, Franco 'nun ölümüyle birlikte ülkede ortaya çıkan yeni dönem anlatılmaktadır. Farklı toplumsal kesimler arasında demokratik bir rejime geçiş için nasıl uzlaş ı sağlandığına, söz konusu süreçte etkili olan belli başlı toplumsal ve siyasal aktörlere ve 1977 genel seçimleri, 198J 'deki askeri darbe girişimi gibi demokrasiye geçişte yaşanan önemli gelişmelere değinilmektedir. Sonuç bölümünde ise İspanya 'nın, bu dönüşümü barışçıl biçimde nasıl gerçekleştirdiğine ilişkin genel bir değerlendirme yapılmaktadır.
