Abstract
As a consequence of negative conditions of Industrial Revolution, cities face the danger of loosing their liveable characteristics. The corruption of liveable features of the city caused the orientation to the rural environments as ideal living spaces. The intersection of civilisation and cjties which is the important instrument of determination of the level of civilisation, gives us a clue about the relationship of city and Utopia. Today's urban environments have become a space that improves the power of political authority and an instrument for the unification of people's social life. While Utopias are the order suggestions that set up as ideal society designs, dystopias .reflect the reactions for the present social system. For understanding the place of city in Utopias we must study on urban design within the city firstly in Utopias, then in dysutopias and lastly in environmental Utopias. When studying on Plato's, More's, Campanella's, Cabet's, Bellamy's, Morris' and Oilman's Utopias, we can understand how an ideal life is designed in Utopias. Dystopia examples which are critically designed as reactions for the present social and political orders. Forster, Zamiatin, Orwell, Vonnegut, Brabdbury and Senel's dystopia examples might be examined. Ecological Utopias which are written at the second half of the 20th century, have idealized rural societies that harmonize to the nature. At this context, Le Guin, Piercy and Firestone's Utopian works are appraised shortly. The reflection of Utopias to the social life are organized as rural communes. The orientation of modern Utopias to the rural life instead of city life, proves us the collapse of the city.
