Abstract
The optimum stochastic (noise) and mathematical model for the assesment of Continuous Global Positioning System (CGPS) coordinate time series were investigated. For this purpose, we analyzed 5 years of data (2000-2005) from five CGPS stations of European Sea Level Service Research Infrastructure (ESEAS-RI) project. CGPS coordinate time series are obtained in the International Terresterial Reference Frame 2000 (ITRF2000) by using GAMIT/GLOBK software. When lineer regression analysis with Least Square Estimation (LSE) is applied by assuming GPS time series have purely white noise, the changes in the site velocities are found to be negligible after 2.5 years (30 months) and 3 years (36 months) for horizontal and vertical components respectively. Then CGPS coordinate time series are analysed using LSE and Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) methods with four different noisemodels and three different mathematical models:velocity, velocity + annual and semi-annual harmonics and velocity and all the significant harmonics in the amplitudespectrum. We concluded that the mathematical model including velocity and all the significant harmonics in the amplitude spectrum and the noise model with fractional spectral index seems most reliable and most realistic approach among the other choices for the determination of both horizontal and vertical station velocities. However, when the duration of computation is considered in addition to the reliability, the mathematical model including velocity + annual and semi-annual harmonics with an assumption of white and flicker noise is suggested an appropriate approach.
