The Claustrophobia of the Two Nations in Davıd Hare’s Via Dolorosa

Abstract

Considered as one of the most prolific and political playwrights of the twentieth century, Hare, taking the international events occurring in the Middle East into his agenda, aims to observe and demonstrate the effects of Israeli-Palestinian events on the affairs of these two communities and their people in Via Dolorosa. Although many writings about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have been penned over the last years, Hare's Via Dolorosa seems to be transmitted in a live broadcast by a witness in a realistic way, since it is exhibited in monologue style. Via Dolorosa (1998), based on questions of how the two nations peacefully survive on the same land, deals with the universal questions of two different peoples of different faith and religion. This study centers around the subjective views of a western writer on how two different societies, whose beliefs and physical images, cultures, and lifestyles are totally different from each other, can be kept alive on the same land, and whether the stronger or the stronger of the religious faith can survive in this geography.

Özet

Yirminci yüzyılın en yetkin politik tiyatro yazarlarından biri olarak günümüzde göze çarpan Hare, uluslararası olayları gündemine alarak, İsrail-Filistin özelinde gerçekleşen olayların bu iki toplum insanlarını ve bireylerine etkilerini gözler önüne Via Dolorosa oyunuyla sergilemeyi amaçlar. Son yıllarda İsrail - Filistin açmazıyla ilgili pek çok yazı ya da oyun kaleme alınmış olsa da Hare’in Via Dolorosası monolog tarzında sergilendiği için olayların gerçekçi bir şekilde ve görgü tanığı tarafından canlı yayında aktarılması gibidir.
