Abstract

Being a story of a cathedral which is about to be demolished, Notre-Dame de Paris, has identified with the character called Quasimodo and it has been translated into almost all languages as “Hunchback of Notre-Dame”. Hunchbacked Quasimodo, whose one eye is blind, one foot is crippled and who is also deaf and ugly, is one of the first handicapped characters who has been psychologically analyzed. In this novel of Victor Hugo, which shows us with respect to romantic traditions of the 19th century the point of view towards handicapped people, the process of being othered of a handicapped person will be told.

Yıkılmak istenen bir katedralin öyküsü olan Notre-Dame de Paris Türkçe çevirisiyle Notre Dame’ın Kamburu romanı, Quasimodo kahramanıyla öylesine özdeşleşmiştir ki hemen hemen her dilde Notre Dame’ın Kamburu olarak tercüme edilmiştir. Bir gözü kör, bir ayağı topal, sağır ve çirkin olan kambur Quasimodo, psikolojik derinliğine inilen ilk engelli kahramanlardan birisidir. Orta Çağ döneminin engellilere bakış açısını 19.yüzyıl romantik geleneğiyle ele alan Victor Hugo’nun bu tarihi romanında, toplumun dışsallaştırdığı Quasimodo’nun ötekileşme süreci toplumun ve yazarın bakış açısından hareketle psiko-sosyolojik açıdan ele alınacaktır.
