No More Monkey Bussiness: The Legacy of Inherit the Wind after 91 Years

Abstract

The Scopes Monkey Trial of 1925, which took place in Dayton, Tennessee of the USA, still shakes and resonates today. What started as a trial to decide whether Darwin's theory of evolution should be taught in classrooms within the scope of a newly acted the Butler Act had quickly spiraled out of control and became a battleground for the freedom of free speech and thought as well as a confrontation between the advocates of religion and science. This multi-layered trial and the play Inherit the Wind, which was based on it, as well as its first movie adaptation have all proved to be very popular. The play also found its way onto Turkish theatre stages years later and drew considerable criticism, both positive and negative. This article, after accumulating and presenting information on the importance of the original trial and the play within its historical context, would then try to evaluate its position in Turkish theatre history by employing press cuttings from the period and introductory remarks provided by the directors and translator of the plays.

Özet

Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nin Tennessee eyaletinin Dayton şehrinde 1925 yılında görülen Scopes Maymun Davası etkileri halen hissedilebilen bir hukuk davası niteliği taşı- maktadır. Darwin'in Evrim Kuramı'nın derslerde öğretilip öğretilemeyeceği noktasından başlayan dava hemen sonrasında çok katmanlı bir şekilde fikir ve ifade özgürlüğü ile köktencilik ve özgür/liberal düşünce sistemlerinin savaş alanı halline gelmiştir. Olayın geçtiği dö- nemde ABD'nin Birinci Savaş sonrası içinden geçmekte olduğu sosyal ve ekonomik çalkantı- lar ile davanın ülke çapında tanınmış oldukça tartışmalı karakterleri, davanın dönemin medyası tarafından ülke içi ve dışına anbean taşınması söz konusu duruşmayı bir hukuk olayı olmasının çok ötesine taşımıştır. Olaydan yola çıkılarak yazılan ve son derece popüler olan tiyatro oyunu, Inherit the Wind, yaklaşık 20 yıl sonra ülkemizde de iki kez sergilenmiş ve dö- neme özgü tepkilerle karşılaşmıştır. Bu yazı, söz konusu davayı ve oyunu irdeleyerek dönemin Türk basınında çıkan eleştirilerini de göz önüne alıp bu tarihi olay ve metnin Türkiye'deki iz düşümünü göstermeye çalışmıştır
