Abstract
Aim: Acute gastroenteritis is the main reason of childhood mortality in developing countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate causative microorganisms of childhood gastroenteritis in Edirne in comparison with other regions of Turkey. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 222 patients admitted to thePediatric Unit of Trakya University Hospital with the diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis from January 1996 to December 2002. The causative agents of gastroenteritis in these children were comparatively described. Results: Among 222 children, 54 had rotavirus gastroenteritis, while 15 had Shigella, 15 had Salmonella, 5 had Entamoeba hystolytica, and 5 had Giardia. In 119 cases, no causative agent could be found. In the last year out of 117 children, 9 had Campylobacter jejuni gastroenteritis. Conclusion: There is no difference between the regions of Turkey considering the causative agents of childhood gastroenteritis except amebiasis which is very common in southeast Turkey.
