Evaluation of the awareness of anesthesia and effectiveness of preoperative interviews among patients consulted to our hospital

Abstract

Objective: Anesthesiologists are working not only in operating rooms, but also in intensive care units and pain clinics. Unfortunately, many people don’t know the anesthesiology as a specialized department of medicine and even the anesthesiologist as a physician. With this survey, we aimed to determine our patients’ awareness about anesthesia practice and role of anesthesiologists and also evaluate the effectiveness of preoperative anesthesiology consultations in improving awareness concerning anesthesia Method: A total of 300 literate patients, aged between 18 and 70, scheduled for elective surgery and referred to anesthesiology polyclinic were included in the study. After patients’ written approvals were obtained they were asked to complete a 22-item questionnaire form before and after the anesthesiology consultation. The survey had three parts including questions about demographic data and role of anesthesiologists. Results were analysed using Pearson’s chi-square, and Fisher’s exact tests. Results: Number of correct answers to the questions about anesthesia and anesthesiologists increased after consultation with anesthesiologist. Level of awareness that anesthesiologists were specialists in anesthesiology increased up to 88% after preoperative anesthesiology consultation. Percentage of correct responses increased in parallel with enhanced education level. All of these findings were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion: The effectiveness of polyclinic interviews on increasing awareness about anesthesia has been revealed, and we have arrived at a conclusion that face to face interview with the anesthesiologist is very important.

Amaç: Anestezteziyologlar artık yalnızca ameliyathanelerde değil yoğun bakımlar ve ağrı kliniklerinde de görev yapmaktadırlar. Anesteziyolojinin özel uzmanlık gerektiren bir branş olduğu, hatta anesteziyoloğun bir doktor olduğu ne yazık ki birçok birey tarafından bilinmemektedir. Biz bu anket çalışması ile hastanemize başvuran elektif cerrahi planlanmış hastalarda anestezi uygulamaları ve anesteziyoloğun görevleriyle ilgili farkındalığın tespit edilmesi ve ameliyat öncesi anesteziyoloji poliklinik görüşmelerinin bu farkındalığı arttırma yönünde etkinliğinin değerlendirilmesini amaçladık. Yöntem: On sekiz ile 70 yaş arası elektif cerrahi planlanan ve anesteziyoloji polikliniğine başvuran 300 okur-yazar hasta çalışmaya dahil edildi. Yazılı onamları alındıktan sonra anesteziyolog ile görüşme öncesi ve sonrası toplamda 22 soruluk bir anketi doldurmaları istendi. Anket demografik veriler ve anesteziyoloğun görevlerine ait sorulardan oluşan üç bölüm içermekteydi. Sonuçların istatistiksel analizi için Pearson’s ki-kare test ve Fisher’s exact test kullanıldı. Bulgular: Anesteziyolog ile görüşme sonrası anestezi ve anestezi doktoru ile ilgili sorulara verilen doğru yanıtlarda artış oldu. Anesteziyoloğun uzmanlaşmış bir doktor olduğunun farkındalık oranı %88’e yükseldi. Eğitim seviyesi arttıkça sorulara doğru yanıt verme oranının da arttığı belirlendi. Tüm bunların istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olduğu bulundu (p<0,05). Sonuç: Anestezi farkındalığını arttırmada poliklinik görüşmelerinin etkinliği ortaya konulmuş ve anesteziyolog ile bire bir görüşmenin çok önemli olduğu sonucuna ulaştırmıştır.
