Abstract
This study reviews the ideas of Platon on art on the basis of his theory of ideas. Plato is saide tobe the first philosopher of the thought history who approaches art as mimesis (fake). Platon divides world as visible world and intelligible world in two lines. In this divided line, visible world reflects ideas while intelligible world is the just illumination of ideas. Accordingly, work of art, as the illumantion of intelligible world, would become the mimesis of the fake. Namely, senses are the copies of world objects and not something differing from mimesis. Within this axis, artist grows away gradually from reality by trying to reflect the superficial reality among the senses. However, the ultimate pupose of the man should be to come up to ideas, which means that the work of art does not count for something in terms of the reflection of reality such that the work of art, ideas and the senses as the reflection of ideas remain in the background of world. In short, Platon’s art theory develops within the axis of his theory of ideas.
