Abstract

Aim: The stigmatizing attitudes of healthcare professionals toward schizophrenia patients may have an adverse effect on patient lives. The aim of this study was to determine the attitudes of students at a school of health sciences about schizophrenia. Materials and method: The study was conducted with 291 students. Of the students in the sample, 68.7% were women. Among the students, 34.0% were enrolled in the first baccalaureate year, 33.0% in the second, 19.6% in the third and 13.4% in the fourth baccalaureate year. Their mean age was 20.551.47. A group of 4.5% of the students stated that they had previously received psychiatric treatment and 17.5% that their close relatives had mental health issues. A Descriptive Information Form and forms consisting of the 32-item schizophrenia sub-section of the questionnaire used in the project conducted by the Psychiatric Research and Rehabilitation Center (PAREM) for the study on "exploring the attitudes of the public regarding psychiatric diseases" were used to collect data. The required approvals and permissions were obtained for conducting the study. Results: A group of 88.7% of the students stated that schizophrenia is an illness and 60.8% noted that schizophrenic individuals are mentally ill. Regarding the etiology of the illness, the students said that the illness is predominantly caused by the problems individuals experience (51.5%) while others said it stemmed from the structure of an individual's personality (45.4%). Of the students, 55.6% declared that the illness could be treated and 84.0% said that it could be treated with psychotherapy. A section of the students (42.3%) thought that schizophrenic individuals should not circulate in public, while 47.8% believed schizophrenic patients to be aggressive and 64.3% that such patients could not make sound decisions. Of the students participating in the study, 91.1% said they would not want to be married to a schizophrenic patient, 67.7% said they would not want to be neighbors and 64.6% stated that they would not want to work with someone who was schizophrenic. It was found that there were statistically significant differences between the students' departments and the diagnosis of schizophrenia (p<.05). Conclusion:It was concluded that students were able to recognize the illness of schizophrenia but they had substantial misconceptions about its etiology and treatment. With close to half of the students exhibiting a stigmatizing attitude toward schizophrenia patients, expressing an aversion to marrying, being neighbors or working with an individual with schizophrenia, it was concluded that they had a significant lack of desire to have a schizophrenia patient in their lives.
