in the Islamic Land, was annexed to the Ottoman Empire in 1461 by Fatih SultanMehmet and entered a rapid process of Islamization and Turkishness after these dates.This article seeks to examine the historical adventure of educational activities inGiresun, basically covering the years 1397-1920. During the classical period, theeducational activities in Giresun continued with the great contributions of dervishlodges, especially through the teacher’s training schools, [ET2]primary schools, fridaymosques [ET3]and madrasahs. During the modernization process that started withTanzimat, secondary schools, junior high schools and senior high schools in Giresunwere influenced by this moderation and innovation processes. [ET4]Non-Muslimchildren living in Giresun were involved in educational [ET5]activities through theirown establishments. The perception of "there is no madrasa culture in Giresun", whichis sometimes expressed among the people, became invalid by the identification of themadrasas whose numbers exceed 100.[ET6]
