School Climate as a Predictor of Secondary School Students’ Attitude Levels toward Universal Values

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the predictive role of secondary school students’ perception of school climate on their attitudes toward universal values. A total of 404 students receiving education in secondary schools located in the province of Karabuk during the school year of 2016-2017 participated in the study, which was designed using quantitative research method and relational screening model. The data of the study were collected using “School Climate Scale” developed by Calik and Kurt (2010) and “Attitude toward Universal Values Scale” developed by Koc (2007). Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient and Multiple Linear Regression analysis techniques were used in analyzing the data of the present study. The results revealed that secondary school students’ attitudes toward universal values were significantly correlated with their perception of school climate and school climate was an important variable explaining the attitude toward universal values. The results of the study were correlatively discussed in the relevant literature and some suggestions were presented to the implementers and policy makers based on the results.
Özet
Bu çalışmanın amacı, ortaokul öğrencilerinin okul ikimi algılarının evrensel değerlere ilişkin tutumlarını yordama düzeyini belirlemektir. Nicel araştırma yönteminde ve ilişkisel tarama modelinde tasarlanan bu araştırmaya 2016-2017 öğretim yılında Karabük’te bulunan ortaokullarda öğrenim gören toplam 404 öğrenci oluşmuştur. Araştırmada veri toplamak amacıyla Çalık ve Kurt (2010) tarafından geliştirilen “Okul İklimi Ölçeği” ve Koç (2007) tarafından geliştirilen “Evrensel Değerlere İlişkin Tutum Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır. Araştırma verilerinin analizinde Pearson Momentler Çarpım Korelasyon Katsayısı ve Çoklu Doğrusal Regresyon Analiz tekniğinden faydalanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçları ortaokul öğrencilerinin evrensel değerlere ilişkin tutumlarıyla okul iklimi algılarının ilişkili olduğu ve okul ikliminin evrensel değerlere yönelik tutumu açıklayan önemli bir değişken olduğunu göstermektedir. Çalışmanın sonuçları ilgili literatürle ilintili bir şekilde tartışılmış ve çalışmanın sonuçlarından yola çıkarak uygulayıcılara ve politika yapıcılara birtakım öneriler sunulmuştur.
