Özet

Bu makale, 18. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında İstanbul'da sütanneliğin çeşitli boyutlarına değinmeye çalışmaktadır. Sütannelik, anne ölümleri ve emzirmeye engel oluşturan hastalıklar gibi sebeplerden dolayı oldukça yaygındı. Anne sütünden mahrum kalan çocuklara farklı yollardan sütanne temin edilebiliyordu. Ücretli sütannelik daha çok toplumun varlıklı kesimlerine özgüydü. Toplumun geniş kesimleri anne sütünden mahrum kalan çocuklarını emzirmek için öncelikle akraba ve tanıdık kadınların yardımına başvuruyordu. Bunun mümkün olmaması durumunda sütanne tutulmakta ya da çocuklar "tebenni" adı altında başka ailelere verilmekteydi. Osmanlı İstanbul'unda sütannelerin büyük bir kısmı, ailelerinin geçimine katkı sağlamaya çalışan yoksul kadınlardan oluşuyordu

Abstract

This article, tries to touch upon the various dimensions of the wet-nursing in İstanbul in the second half of the eighteenth century. Due to reasons such as maternal mortality and diseases constitute an obstacle to breastfeeding wet-nursing was quite common. Wet-nurse could be provided in different ways to children deprived of their mother's milk. Paid wet-nursing was more particular to affluent segments of the society. Large segments of the society were primarily resorted to help of relatives and acquainted women to breastfeed their children who deprived of their mother's milk. In case it was not possible wet-nurse was hired or children were given to other families under the name of "tebenni". A large part of the wet-nurses in the Ottoman İstanbul consisted of poor women who tried to contribute to the livelihood of their families.
