Abstract

After the conquests of İstanbul, the moats of İstanbul and Galata Land Walls losttheir military nature and became productive sites. During the Ottoman period, theuse of the moat of İstanbul Land Walls as market gardens, and that of the Galata assite of rope-spinning manufacturers were a result of deliberate decision. The attemptto prevent housing at the foot of the walls contributed towards creating productionsites which served as the protection zone for the land walls. This study examinesthe land-use in the moats, and the dynamics of urban development at the time of thedemolishing of Galata Land Walls.
