Abstract
The Cold War has had important influence on the Middle East, as on every part of theworld, from Asia Pacific to South America and from Europe to the Caucasus. Undoubtedly, one of the important manifestations of the Cold War is the military coups that occurred inthe Middle East in the 1950s.The aim of this study is to determine the symbiotic relationshipbetween the cold war and these coups. In the introduction of the study, the conflicts between the US, the USSR and ArabNationalism, the three major power centers in the Middle East, which fuelled instabilityand formed the ground for military coups in the 1950s, were discussed. Then, the outlinesof the coups in Syria, Iraq, Egypt and Iran that took place in this period were examined andthe impacts of global and regional power struggles on these coups were evaluated. Finally, the “defacto” effects of the blocs of the blockades between the states of the region have beenexamined in the context of “Baghdad Pact” and “Great Syrian Project”.
