THE GOVERNORATE OF YEMEN OF AHMED MUHTAR PASHA AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE OTTOMAN ADMINISTRATION IN YEMEN (1868-1909)

Abstract
The Yemen, located in the south of Arabian Peninsula, was one of the most importantattributed to soil since Yemen was included in the Ottoman state borders. Even if the OttomanAdministration firstly started during the time of Sultan Selim, the real domination beganwith Hadım Suleyman Pasha. The Ottoman Administration, which withdrew from the regionafter the dominance continued for a while, reopen with Vice Tevfik Pasha in 1849. When this operation, attempted with forces collected from the Egypt and Hijaz, was inconclusive, anorder could not be established in the region until the governor of Ahmet Muhtar Pasha. Themain event that complicated the facility of administration was often experienced rebellions.In this complicated period of Yemen, after the British got permission to established coal yardin Aden, they settled in Aden and with the opening of Suez Canal, they further increasedthe population. After a while, not only British but also other great powers began to settlearound the Red Sea. However, Ahmet Muhtar Pasha, with the appointed by the governor,had embarked on a major military operation. As a successful result of this movement, AhmetMuhtar Pasha had attempted on a new organization in military and civilian field. In thisstudy, it will mention on the importance of Yemen and the governorship of Ahmet MuhtarPasha. Therefore, it will contribute to accumulation of knowledge about the existence ofOttoman Empire in Yemen and the activities in this region.
