THE INQUIRY FOR A JUSTICE ON MICHAEL KOHLAAS: A THIN LINE BETWEEN AN HONOURABLE REBELLION AND ANARCHISM

Abstract

The book, Michael Kohlhaas, is about justice. And the author of the book, Heinrich Von Kleist, is known as a dramatic writer of Romanticism in literature. This novella describes what happens when the Social Contract is broken; and when the citizen is secluded from society and its common-law rules. Therefore, the book makes you think about the concept of justice, and makes you realize what could be the results of injustice. The novella has also been adapted for theater, cinema and opera many times. And, especially these days, it is still important to realize the background of the concept: justice; as we have started disputing all macro discourse with postmodernism. This study aims to examine justice that appears in the media and in politics every day, through Kohlaas’s fight in the 1500’s. A Literary examination is out of the topic of this study

Edebiyatta romantizm akımının dramcısı olarak bilinen Heinrich Von Kleist, Michael Kohlhaas adlı eserinde adaleti konu alır. Toplum Sözleşmesi sarsıldığında, toplumun kuralları ve genel hukuk, bireyi dışarıda bıraktığında yaşananları anlatan eser; adalet kavramı üzerinde düşünmeye yol açarak, adaletsizliğin sonuçlarını gözler önüne sermiştir. Günümüze kadar tiyatro, sinema ve opera uyarlaması yapılan eser, postmodernizmle birlikte sorgulamaya başladığımız tüm makro söylemlerin içine adaleti de eklediğimiz şu günlerde, adalet kavramın temeline inmek bakımından önemlidir. Her gün medyada ve siyasette seyrettiğimiz adaletin 1500’lü yıllardaki sorgulamasını, Kohlhaas’ın mücadelesi üzerinden yapmak bu çalışmanın temel amacıdır.
