Abstract

The aim of the present study is to determine the place of horror stories in world children's literature, which have enjoyed a wide readership in Western children's literature especially since the 1990s, and to analyse the reasons why this genre has failed to become common in Turkish children's literature. The study first discusses how horror has been treated in different genres classified under children's literature throughout history. It then focuses on the general nature of contemporary horror stories for children and the value of this genre. It finally attempts to explain the reasons why horror stories have failed to become popular in Turkish children's literature. These reasons include the tendency of gatekeepers such as parents and teachers not to introduce horror stories to children for several reasons, the inhibition of writers about writing different genres such as horror stories that are considered outside the mainstream, theopinion thathorror stories are less qualified than other genres, the incompatibility of child images predominant in Turkish children's literature with those in horror stories, and the ongoing inclination in some parts of the society to regard horror, namely frightening children, as a way of disciplinary upbringing.
