Abstract
Analytical geometry, which is one of the most important fields of work in modern mathematics, is one of the branches of science tried to be transferred to the Ottomans in the Modernization Period. In this study, analytical geometry books / book chapters of nine different writers written in Ottoman Turkish have been tried to be revealed. Despite the fact that Descartes's geometry studies were not mentioned in Başhoca İshak Efendi's work titled Mecmûa-i Ulûm-ı Riyâziye, which is the first source of modern mathematics in the Ottoman Empire, we found out that analytical geometry was used during the time. One of the first analytic geometry books of the Ottomans is Hendese-i Halliyye, written by Ahmed Zihnî Efendi, can be argued to be far beyond in terms of knowledge for analytical geometry. Şükrü Sayan, appended an article entitled “On a novel theory concerning the designation of imaginary quantities” to the end of his analytic geometry textbook, which is held to be the most proficient publication on the subject of the period in Turkish, though proposed to expose “a novel theory”, in fact, does not introduce a novel mathematical concept or facilitate algebraic calculations. All the publications reviewed, it is observed that the authors were military and their sources were mainly French
Özet
Modern matematiğin en temel uğraş alanlarından biri olan analitik geometri, Osmanlı Modernleşme Dönemi’nde ülkeye aktarılmaya çalışılan bilim dallarından biridir. Eldeki çalışma Osmanlıca kaleme alınmış dokuz farklı yazarın analitik geometri kitaplarını / kitap bölümlerini karşılaştırmalı olarak ortaya koymaktadır. Modern matematiğin Osmanlılar’a girdiği ilk kaynak olma özelliğine sahip, Başhoca İshak Efendi’nin Mecmûa-i Ulûm-ı Riyâziye adlı eserinde Descartes’ın geometri çalışmalarından bahsedilmemesine rağmen, analitik geometrinin kullanıldığı tarafımızca tespit edilmiştir. Ahmed Zihnî Efendi’nin Hendese-i Halliyye (1892) adlı eseri, Osmanlılar’da yazılmış ilk analitik geometriye gerçekten vakıf kitaplardan biridir.
