Abstract

The coins treated in this paper are significant examples in terms of reflecting the historical, economic, religious and social structure of Nikaia, one of the important cities of the Bithynia Region in ancient history. In the study, the reflection of cults that were worshiped in Nikaia on the ancient coins was examined. It has also been looked for an answer to a question, whether the founding myth of this town has any traces on these coins, or not. Emperors on the front face of Nikaia coins are Marcus Aurelius (161-180 (AD), Lucius Verus (161-169 AD), Tranquillina (161-180 AD), Commodus (172-192 AD) Caracalla (198-217 AD), Macrinus (217-218 AD) Gordian III (AD 238-244) and Trebonianus Gallus (251-253 AD) respectively. The depictions on the back of these coins are Gods, Goddesses, Heros and a deified emperor. In this study, it has been tried to illuminate the presence of cults, which have been worshiped in the Bithynia Region and Ancient Nikaia, but has not been studied much, by the evidence of ancient coins.
