Abstract

Ahmed Midhat Efendi, one of the leading figures of the late Ottoman-Turkish intellectual life, fired the fuse of the ancient debate on “religion-science relations” when he translated the well-known American writer William Draper’s History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science. This article discusses the importance of the subject matter in terms of the history and philosophy of science, and examines Ahmed Midhat Efendi's main thesis that different religions develop different relations with science

Modern Osmanlı-Türk düşünce hayatının önde gelen isimlerinden Ahmed Midhat Efendi, XIX. yüzyılın tanınmış Amerikalı yazar William Draper’ın History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science’ını Türkçe’ye aktardığında “din-bilim ilişkileri” konusundaki kadim tartışmanın fitilini de ateşlemişti. Bu makalede, söz konusu meselenin bilim tarihi ve felsefesi bakımından önemi üzerinde durulmuş ve Ahmed Midhat Efendi’nin farklı dinlerin bilimle farklı ilişkiler geliştirdiği tezi ana-çizgileriyle betimlenmiştir.
