Problems Faced by School Administrators in Integration ofSyrian Students to Education System

Suriyeli Öğrencilerin Eğitim Sistemine Entegrasyonunda Okul Yöneticilerinin Karşılaştığı Sorunlar

Abstract

Migration, which is defined as temporary or permanent displacement from one place to another for various reasons, is a phenomenon that have existed from past to present. Because of the still ongoing circumstances in neighbours, Turkey has faced the phenomenon of immigration in recent years. The aim of this study is to investigate the problems of school administrators with Syrian students studying in Şehitkamil district of Gaziantep and the solutions they have developed for these problems. Since the study deals with the problems of the participants andthe solutions, the study employs phenomenology design of qualitative research methods. While forming the study group, criterion sampling was used. According to the interviews, 4 themes were determined. Within the framework of these themes, the opinions ofthe participants were evaluated and the solutions were divided into categories. The participants stated that language problemposed an obstacle in various respects; interpreter support was received from internal and external stakeholders and the students were directed to language courses. As adaptation and behaviour problems, violence, hygiene and forming a gang are expressed and counsellor teacher support, directing to social activities and visual presentation and video screenings are expressed as solutions. It was stated that academic incompetencyproblem stemmed from the language barrier and the administrators tried to solve this problem with extra-curricular activities and distribution of Syrian students to the classes equally. Lastly, the participants pointed out that cooperation problem among parentsstemmed from the negative attitude in the Turkish families and tried to solve this problem through communication and cooperation with these families. As a result, it is seen that there are various problemsin the integration of Syrian students, the solutions produced are insufficient, and the solutions of the school administrators need to be implemented and followed up at a more professional and institutional level

Özet

İsteyerek veya istemeyerek çeşitli sebeplerle bir yerden başka bir yere geçici veya kalıcı olarakyer değiştirme olarak tanımlanan göç geçmişten günümüze var olan bir olgudur. Türkiye sınır komşularında yaşanan çeşitli olaylardan kaynaklı olarak son yıllarda göç olgusu ile karşı karşıya kalmıştır. Bu araştırmanın amacı okul yöneticilerinin Gaziantep ili Şehitkâmil ilçesinde eğitim gören Suriyeli öğrencilerle yaşadıkları sorunları ve bu sorunlara dair geliştirdikleri çözüm yollarını araştırmaktır. Araştırma katılımcıların yaşadıkları sorunlar ve çözüm yollarını ele aldığından çalışma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden fenomenoloji deseni ile yapılandırılmıştır. Çalışma grubunun oluşturulmasında ise olasılıksız örnekleme türlerinden ölçüt örnekleme kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada yapılan görüşmeler çerçevesinde 4 tema belirlenmiştir. Bu temalar çerçevesinde katılımcıların görüşleri değerlendirilmiş, çözüm önerileri kategorilere ayrılmıştır. Katılımcılar dil sorununun çeşitli açılardan engel oluşturduğu, iç ve dış paydaşlardan tercüman desteği alındığı ve dil kurslarına yönlendirme yapıldığını ifade etmiştir. Uyum ve davranış sorunuolarak şiddet eğilimi, hijyen ve gruplaşma ifade edilmiş; rehber öğretmen çalışmaları, sosyal faaliyetlere yönlendirme ve görsel ve video gösterimleri çözüm olarak ifade edilmiştir. Akademik yetersizlik sorununun dil engelinden kaynaklandığı ve ders dışı faaliyetler ve Suriyeli öğrencilerin sınıflara eşit dağıtılması çözümleri dile getirilmiştir. Veliler arasında iş birliği sorununun ise Türk ailelerdeki olumsuz tutumdan kaynaklandığı ve bu ailelerle iletişim ve iş birliği ile çözülmeye çalışıldığı ifade edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak Suriyeli öğrenciler entegrasyonunda çeşitli problemler yaşandığı, üretilen çözümlerin yetersiz olduğu, okul yöneticilerinin çözümlerinin daha profesyonel ve kurumsal düzeyde uygulanması ve takip edilmesi gerektiği tespit edilmiştir.
