Abstract
Bibliotherapy, which means treatment, healing with books, is a method of therapy that makes use of books to contribute to personality development of individuals through texts, to help them to recognize and solve their problems and to prevent the occurrence of potential problems. Today, bibliotherapy has two areas of application: “clinical bibliotherapy” and “developmental bibliotherapy”. Clinical bibliotherapy is administered by a specialist psychologist, psychological counsellor or therapist in medical settings for the treatment of the individual’s severe emotional and behavioural problems. Developmental bibliotherapy can be administered by the library staff or educators to prevent or effectively cope with problems that may be encountered in daily life in educational environments such as schools, classrooms and libraries.Since books and texts are the main tools of bibliotherapy, the most appropriate course in which this method can be used in the educational environment is the Turkish course. The current study aiming to determine the bibliotherapeutic elements in the texts in Turkish textbooks of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades is a case study “based on the deep investigation of one or several cases” (Yıldırım and Şimşek, 2005: 277). The study employed the content analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods. The documents examined in the study consist of 156 texts found in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade Turkish textbooks published by the Ministry of National Education to be studied in 2014-2015 school year. As the data collection tool, the 20-item Bibliotherapeutic Elements Rubric developed through the revision of the 15-item rubric developed by Erdemir (2016) to determine the bibliotherapeutic elements in fable-type texts by seeking expert opinions was used. Within the context of the current study, the texts found in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade Turkish textbooks published by the Ministry of National Education to be studied in 2014-2015 school year were analyzed with the content analysis technique. The data obtained from the texts were analyzed by means of descriptive statistical techniques (percentages and frequencies) and the numerical data are presented in tables. As a result of the analysis, a total of 386 bibliotherapeutic elements were found in the texts in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade Turkish textbooks. When the distribution of the these bibliotherapeutic elements across the grade levels is examined, it is seen that 37.8% of them are in the texts in the 5th grade Turkish textbook; 24.6% in the texts in the 6th grade Turkish textbook; 19.5% in the texts in the 7th grade Turkish textbook and 18.1% in the texts in the 8th grade Turkish textbook. Contrary to what was expected, it was found that with the increasing grade level, the bibliotherapeutic elements in the textbooks decreased, which seems to be not in compliance with the cognitive and affective developmental characteristics of students. The most frequently encountered bibliotherapeutic elements are “developing new values, attitudes and behaviours”, “learning about the environment, society and world”, “having national and spiritual values”; however, the element “finding solutions to conflicts between parents and children” was not observed in any of the texts. The results of the current study have revealed that in the application of the developmental bibliotherapy in Turkish classes, the texts in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade Turkish textbooks can be used
