Abstract

Generally considered as highly problematic, even next to impossible, within the field of translation studies, humour translation requires and deserves special attention since it may easily unite or separate people within the context of one single joke or cartoon. As indicated elswhere in the text, a clear and totally accepted description for humour is not available yet. The area this term covers is almost boundless that, to come up with an alf-rourrd definition is extremely difficult. This difficulty finds its reflection in humour translation. We wanted to show this difficulty by employing various cartoons and strips from certain American and British magazines. It is proposed that majority of cartoons with speech baloons are translatable to a certain degree unless they are strictly political or crammed with regional issues and accents. It is proposed that although a perfect translation is always a desirable concept in almost every single area of translation the translation of humour could still be realized within a number of frameworks.
