Abstract

German Jesuit Priest Friedrich Spee and his work Cautio Criminalis, one of the most important contemporary works opposing the witch hunts, will be examined in this study. 51 questions, which form the core of the work, are translated into Turkish. Although the study was based primarily on the German translation of the work, the original Latin text and its English translation were also consulted. The period between 1350 and 1780 in Europe is called “the Age of Witch Hunts”. The witch hunts peaked between the years 1580 and 1630 and Cautio Criminalis (1631) was written during this period. Spee, along with Adam Tanner, is one of the most respected names in the literarture opposing the witch hunts. During his short life, Spee endeavored to ensure that a fair legal procedure followed by the courts during the witch trials, informers not used in trials and torture not used as an interrogation method to elicit confessions from anyone accused of witchcraft
