Abstract
Abstract: It is one of the most evident shortcomings of historiography that legend retails far better than historical fact and at times legends surpass historical events, especially if of ancient Greek or Biblical origin. Amazons were one of those legendary peoples, created first by Homeric myth, and spread widely through an art form called Amazonomachies. It is significant that Charles Texier, the discoverer of the Hittite capital Boğazköy-Hattua, assigned the rock reliefs of Yazılıkaya to the legendary combat between the Amazons and the ancient Greeks. This article provides evidence concerning the historicity of the Amazons in written sources dating from the Anatolian Bronze Age. Archaeological evidence for their presence does not exist, and those that have been connected with them are absolutely ambivalent. Due to new textual attestations from the Hittite capital of Hattua we are fortunately able to establish that the Amazons were not a creation of human fantasy, but on the contrary, they were the reminiscence of remote prehistoric societies that formerly inhabited Cappadocia and Western and Northern Anatolia. Among the texts in the Boğazköy archives there are those which attest to all of the basic elements and motives that are recorded in the legends concerning the Amazons. Hititte tablet, in spite of its poorly preservation, attests in connection with some girls gathered from villages the following phrases: hudak para alik - to come close, to approach immediately, rape, ep-/appanzi to take someone sexually, da- to take the girls, tarup- to gather the girls, pehute- to take away, transport the girls, watai- to sin, to commit an unusual crime, river bank and naked (girls) indicating that some obscene acts were committed.
