Abstract
Plato, in his understanding of ideal state, every citizen would not be allowed to live freely with all their wishes even though he is aware that the human nature searches the good and beauty; and therefore he tries to control tightly all poets and their poems. Aristotle sharing massive agreement in these thoughts with Plato, examines the poems regarding their epistemological values along with the aesthetical value given by human being. al-Farabi merging these two Greek philosopher’s thoughts, he takes the poems into account in both epistemologically, as in Aristotle’s method, and its practical usage for a virtuous state aiming for how to make individuals better citizens. Ibn Bajja (Avempace), unlike Plato and al-Farabi, builds not a virtuous society or state but an idea of a virtuous individual (al-mutawahhid) living in a non-virtuous state or society. According to him, this individual would develop himself by getting rational/philosophical knowledge, and also reach the great happiness by sharing his life with a close group or people who understands him. It seems that Ibn Bajja, with the influence of his Islamic culture he lived in, used the poems as an instrument for getting rational/philosophical knowledge or for transferring the knowledge to his friends. In this article, it has been examined that how Ibn Bajja had accompanied poems into his philosophical works as not a poet but a philosopher.
