Abstract

Before scholasticism, memory was given little importance due to the belief that it belonged to the realm of senses and emotions. Centring on religion and reason, scholastic thought redened memory in relation to reason. In this context, memory came to be recognised as the connection between the past, the present, and the future, which made Prudence, one of the four cardinal virtues in Christian belief, possible. This, in return, increased the importance of memory as a prerequisite for becoming a good person, as well as a good Christian. Thus, memory developed into a signicant concept in Medieval Christian philosophy. It was also for this reason that the improvement of memory was a frequently addressed subject during this period. Regarding the tradition of religious drama that emerged in the 10th century as a means of improving memory, therefore, this study focuses on the following question: How could such an understanding of drama became widespread, for it made intense use of images that were placed outside of reason, and at the same time had religion as its subject, besides being approved by the religious authorities? In this context, the study examines The York Cycle, an example of British religious drama tradition, as a manifestation of the understanding of memory in the period.
