Abstract
The aim of this study is to discuss sexist discourse markers and offer an alternative method for translating news1. Firstly, the notion of translation as an ideological activity and the concept of social gender have been taken into consideration within the framework of feminist perspective. Secondly, feminist translation approach has been considered within the context of Lefevere's concept of "rewriting" in order to understand feminist translation activity as a method. I have tried to describe feminist language before suggesting feminist translation as an alternative through studying the column titled2 Ortadoğu Kadını Sesini Yükseltiyor. I have aimed at -using feminist translation strategies for translating news by tracing the discourse markers of the text3 titled Erkek Savaşıyor, Kadın Eziliyor at both lexical and syntactic levels. In other words, I have considered translation process as a feminist activity and tried to come up with an alternative language for news translation thanks to the contributions of translation theorists such as Andrew Chesterman, André Lefevere and Sherry Simon and their approaches to translation as an ideological activity, the notion of "rewriting" and "manipulation" and "feminist translation". Under the light of those concepts, "feminist translation" has been discussed as an ideological yet scientific method in translating news. Thanks to the rewritten news texts, it has been put forward that feminist translation has been an alternative method for news translation and it has been a functional method of translation in terms of feminism and translation discussions. The texts which have been reconstructed by replacing sexist discourse markers with feminine ones have been translated according to the principles of feminist theory. As a second conclusion, it has been determined that the notion of "gender" is problematic in Turkish translation as it has been limited to "masculine" and "feminine" sex boundaries and this discussion has been so significant for feminist and "gender" studies. Whether another alternative language is possible in news translation has been traced all through this paper and as a result it has been concluded that this can be possible with the support of scientific and theoretical perspective. However, it should be made clear that whether the essence of language allows this activity or not can be a focus of another study and thefore; it has not been taken into consideration within the scope of this paper. In short, the paper aims at answering certain questions: "can an alternative method for translating news be possible" (the question mentioned above) and "is feminist perspective functional for this kind of acitiviy".
